Social media is usually a good source of image content, especially if you’re saving those photos just for personal use. But if you’re looking to quickly download more photos or an album at once, there’s no way you can do this directly from a website. You can, however, bypass this limitation by using a Google Chrome extension called DownAlbum.
A useful tool with some uninspired design choices
The extension works with popular social media platforms, like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and Ask.fm. The extension display its drop-down menu only when you’re on one of those websites; otherwise, it won’t work.
Speaking of the drop-down menu, I can’t really say that I’m a fan of the colors or the design. Also, the labels on the buttons aren’t exactly clear, so, at first glance, this may look like a less than intuitive add-on. But, in fact, you only need to click on the “Normal” button to get what you want.

You’ll then be prompted to another window where you’ll see the progress of your download. Once this is done, you have to press Ctrl+S to actually save the pictures on your computer. There also a few other options that may or may not influence your download, but it is not immediately clear what they do.
Even though the whole process isn’t the most intuitive, it’s probably quicker than you would expect, and certainly faster than it would be to download each photo one by one.
I can’t really call DownAlbum a great extension. The uninspired design and the cryptic text don’t make it an easy choice. However, if you’re looking for a simple and quick way to download lots of images from Facebook albums, Instagram, Pinterest etc., then DownAlbum is indeed an add-on that does its job well and a great time saver.

Downloading single images is not very useful, but if you have a large number of images to download at once, DownAlbum is the tool you’re looking for.
There’s just one problem: DownAlbum doesn’t provide a way to download videos from Instagram, Twitter or any other social media platforms. So, if you want to download a video from Instagram for instance, you have to save that video as an image first.
This is a big problem, because this is not the only problem that DownAlbum has, which is more like a whole slew of other problems.
I’ll highlight the most important ones here:
1. The interface is uninspiring.
DownAlbum does have a clean and intuitive interface, but it has plenty of space for improvements. Most importantly, the buttons are not clear enough, since they’re sometimes highlighted in red and other colors that might be hard to distinguish from one another.
2. You have to leave the website to save the images.
This is what’s great about the extension: once you start the download, the images are downloaded on your computer and you can directly go back to the website you were browsing on.
But I was rather disappointed by the fact that you have to leave the website. On a desktop computer, I have to click twice on the “Download” button, which is really annoying.
3. You can only download one image at a time.
Sometimes, when you’re downloading lots of images, you can download a single one, but then you have to click again to start the download for the next one.
4. You have to wait for the download to be completed before you can extract and save the images.
This is probably the most frustrating part of this extension: you can only save one image at a time, but it takes about a minute to save the next one. That’s really slow!
5. The download progress window shows only images from a few websites.
